World Kidney Day 2024

Every second Thursday of March is dedicated to World Kidney Day. It is a day to take care of your kidneys and to bring awareness of Kidney health. Orange is used as the color for World Kidney Day. While green is used for kidney disease and Kidney Cancer Awareness and for survivors who donated a kidney. Additionally green ribbons are used for kidney transplant survivors, on dialysis, and those who have kidney disease.

Take care of your kidneys by limiting your salt intake. Use spices with low sodium or without salt to cook your meals. As well as using herbs to add more flavor to your meals. Cook your meals in boiling water or with lower sodium broths. Grill your vegetables, chicken, fish, and plant-based meals.

Exercise for the kidneys because it reduces blood pressure. Also, it helps to reduce water retention. However, keep in mind that too much salt can also cause water retention. An excess of water builds up and puts a strain on the kidneys and other organs. Have a journal of how many fluids that you consume per day such as soups, water, fruit juices, and other liquids.

Using the same journal, you can also write down the foods that you eat, especially if you need to manage your potassium levels. Consult with your primary doctor if you have water retention. As well as checking for vitamin and mineral deficiencies with your doctor. Quit vaping, smoking, and alcohol which affects blood pressure and the kidneys. Manage your weight and ask questions about kidney health with your doctor.

This year World Kidney Day is on March 14th. You can wear something orange on this day. Additionally, use infographics or other researched information about kidney awareness. Use the hashtag, # World Kidney Day. Donate to the kidney foundation.

Have a discussion with your children and family about taking care of their kidneys. Volunteer to participate in a walking marathon for kidney awareness. Reduce your stress levels. Furthermore, consult with your doctor about any health issues such as stress incontinence, water retention, difficulty breathing, and difficulty in lowering your blood pressure. Here are resources about kidney awareness.
