How to Manage Emotional Loneliness?
Emotional
loneliness can occur anytime and anywhere without fully understanding why it
happens. It is a constant struggle with various emotions that can make you stay
quiet and continue to be in silence with yourself. Often not finding someone to
speak about your emotions can make you feel more loneliness. Although most men
can relate to emotional loneliness, it is often not spoken about because of
fear. This fear can prevent you from speaking and expressing yourself.
Another reason it
is tough to express one's emotions is because of rejection and not wanting to
tell your partner. Staying silent feels like the only solution because your
partner might be defensive, complain, or make you feel discontent. Furthermore,
you do not want to build conflict in your marriage. Yet, the more silent you
are in the relationship, the more emotional loneliness gets worse. Moreover,
emotional loneliness can also be felt when you are intimate with your partner.
Often
the excitement, the connection, and the desire to be with your partner can be
overwhelming when there is emotional loneliness. It can be due to work stress,
financial stress, family stress, and other negative experiences that make it
difficult to be intimate with your partner. Additionally, having a negative
experience in the past, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, and having a low self-body
image of oneself are other reasons for feeling emotional loneliness during
intimacy. However, emotional loneliness can be treated with professional therapy
and can help improve your intimacy with your partner. It can improve your
communication and other aspects in the relationship.
As a man it is
easier to show your bravery, your strength, and to be a protector for your
partner. However, this strength and not expressing your sadness can make it
tough to relate to your emotions. You might feel anger, sadness, or other
negative emotions and withhold them. Hiding your negative emotions and not
expressing them can make you feel more loneliness. Furthermore, by doing this
you do not want to bother your partner with worries.
Nonetheless, your
partner might sense something is wrong and might not say anything. As a woman,
it can be confusing to understand a man that is feeling emotional loneliness.
Sometimes giving too much emotional space can put a strain on the relationship.
Other times asking too many questions can make your partner feel distant,
unapproachable, and more silent. Emotional loneliness can occur because of a
traumatic experience which makes it difficult to express one's feelings.
But emotional
loneliness can be due to cultural expectations and not wanting to appear
vulnerable in front of your partner. Other reasons can be low self-confidence
and trying to be a perfectionist. As well as being in denial of one's emotions
and pretending everything is fine. Emotional loneliness is often felt more with
one partner within the marriage. It is necessary to pay attention to your
partner's comments and to communicate well with them.
Yet, feeling
loneliness can sometimes make you form unhealthy habits to help you get
distracted and not think about what is worrying you. Although being married and
being fully committed to your partner and children, emotional loneliness can
build up because of looking for other forms of an emotional connection. This
search for emotional connection can be due to lack of male friendships, being
too busy at work, taking care of family priorities, and not having time for
hobbies. Nonetheless, there are ways to manage your emotional loneliness such
as practicing self-care for your mental and physical wellness. As well as
reducing your stress and getting professional help for depression, anxieties,
and other issues.
Additionally,
find time to connect with male friends who are comfortable in expressing
emotions. Make sure these male friends do not make jokes when expressing one's
emotions. Do not feel ashamed or afraid to express your emotions verbally to
your male friends. Find time to enjoy your hobbies and connecting socially with
your male friends. Seek treatment for substance abuse and other addictions
especially if these addictions began with emotional loneliness.
Practice self-care, gratitude, and do acts of kindness. Accept your emotions and accept what you are feeling in the present. Keep in mind that this loneliness is not permanent. Speak to your partner about your emotional loneliness and consult with a therapist for more ways to manage it. Here are resources for managing your emotional loneliness.
