Tips for Caregivers (Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness)

Taking care of someone with Alzheimer's takes a lot of patience and understanding. To be a caretaker for someone with Alzheimer's takes a lot of energy, sacrifice, and time management. Keeping the same routine every day might seem boring. However, changing the schedule might cause anxiety, nervousness, and other negative emotions for the person who has Alzheimer's. Therefore, keeping all the days on the same schedule will make it less stressful for the caregiver and the person with Alzheimer's.

Sometimes, the caregiver has to give basic instructions or keep the conversation basic. Other times, the caregiver has to repeat the same information such as the time, the day it is, and the weather. Other times, the caregiver has to limit the number of naps for the person who has dementia. Also, the caregiver must educate and learn about the different stages of Alzheimer's. The caregiver must give support to the family and always have family members present.

The caregiver should have a positive attitude. Also, the caregiver might find that some chores will take longer to do such as cleaning and keeping the room clean. The caregiver should avoid cluttered areas and make sure it is a safe environment. Never leave a person with dementia alone.
