Tips for Your Teenager's Mental Health
Taking
care of mental health is not only for adults but also for teenagers. Teenagers
have a tough time expressing themselves, especially if something is bothering
them. There are so many things going on at this age that sometimes teenagers do
not know how to manage their emotions. Also, parents are often so busy with
work, family issues, and other personal issues that they often forget about
their teenager's mental wellness. Yet these tips will help you as a parent to
make sure that your teenager's mental health is in check.
Discuss with them
if you notice any changes in their appetite, new friends you do not know,
changes in extracurricular activities, and mood changes. Although they are
changing and growing up, it is necessary to have discussions with them. Monitor
their screen time and share passwords. Check the computer settings and phone
settings especially if you use the kids or family settings. Follow each other
to see your child's social media.
Give some space
to your teenagers and wait for them to speak to you. However, do not wait too
long for them to come to you as a parent. If they withdraw or feel
uncomfortable makes them feel secure. Let them know they can trust you and that
you are there to listen to them. Encourage them to be motivated in doing their
hobbies.
Practice
relaxation techniques such as Yoga, Tai Chi, breathing exercises, journaling,
mindfulness, dancing, or coloring with them. Tell them to think positively.
Have a sleep routine for them to follow and a homework schedule. If you notice
any changes in sleep, self-harming, or drug and substance abuse; Seek medical
and professional therapy for them. Mental health is critical and needs to be
given attention for them to manage it as an adult. Speak to their primary
doctor for more resources about speaking to them about mental health.
Anxiety is only
one factor that needs to be taken care of before your teenager becomes an
adult. They must learn about controlling their emotions. Also, to be
responsible for their actions and for getting their homework done. Furthermore,
they need to be open with their feelings with speaking to you as a parent. Here
are websites about mental health and teenagers.
