How to Celebrate National Book Week with Family? (Book Week 2025)

During the last week of November, you can celebrate National Book Week with your family. It is a week to dedicate some time to reading, organizing, and to adding new books to your bookshelf. Also, it can be a week dedicated to encouraging your family to read a book to each other. As well as helping your family to appreciate and to participate in a book club discussion. You can join a book club or make your family book club to help your children to read.

Another reason to celebrate National Book Week is to help your family to relax before the holidays. Reading can help you improve your language skills, vocabulary, and writing skills. Sometimes reading can help you feel creative and can make you relax before going to sleep. Nonetheless, reading can also challenge you to remember what you read. You can read and write down the themes and the necessary facts that you might need for a book report or change the ending of a story that you read.

You can select books that remind you of the autumn and winter seasons. Ensure you select a book that is not too frightening to read, especially if you are reading a book before going to sleep. Next, make a hot drink and read together this week. Dedicate one hour to reading a book and make a list of books that you want to read for the following week. Select books that you might like as well as books that have a bigger font size so everyone can read them at home.

Reading tools can be useful for enlarging the font size from a paperback book. Another suggestion is to add enough lighting to your room to help you read. If you are on a budget, you can purchase books for one dollar or less at a thrift store, library sale, yard sales, or online. However, you can also ask for books as a birthday gift, Christmas gift, or for another occasion. A long time ago, I received several books as a Christmas gift and the books had a seasonal winter theme.

The books that I received as a gift inspired me to get creative and to develop my writing style. Often reading books can make you feel peaceful and engaging in conversations with your friends or family. Make your room have a cozy environment and have your children select a book that they like. It is recommended to read their favorite book several times for their vocabulary growth. Here is a list to keep in mind.

  1. Adapt to their mood and help them to read at their own pace.
  2. If they feel pressured to read, take a break by taking a walk to the kitchen or to the backyard.
  3. Decorate their room with pages of an old book or a children's story by framing the pages and using finger paint.
  4. Read a book aloud, play background music, and carefully turn the pages as you ask them questions.
  5. Read a book aloud as they draw or write a song to go with the story.
  6. Have them read a book aloud and applaud after they are finished reading the entire book.
  7. Read a book aloud and have them write words that are new to them and how to spell the words that come from the story.
  8. Have them write short stories on index cards.
  9. Read books from many genres and write down a list of books that they might like.
  10. Make bookmarks and use the bookmarks as they read.
  11. Have a blank journal or notebook and have them write down questions ahead of time before reading the book.
  12. Decorate their room with picture frames that have music lyrics, stories, and comic strips to make them interested in reading.
  13. Use reading prompts and write poetry to go with the story.
  14. Read aloud and make a pledge to read more throughout the autumn and winter season.

If your child has a difficult day, do know that it is best not to pressure them to read a book. However, do practice sounding out the words and spelling out the words as they continue learning to read. Another tip is to have them organize their books by size, colors, and genres. Sometimes labeling the shelves such as fiction, non-fiction, historical, fantasy, science fantasy, satire, contemporary literature, philosophy, drama, and science can make it easier to organize your books. Lastly, read a book before watching the movie that was based on the book.

Use the calendar and write down the books that will be read for one week. Make three-dimensional paper shapes and write words on the paper shapes based on the story book. Another suggestion is to get books that teach numbers, the alphabet, and open your child's imagination. Also, select books that can be inspirational and meaningful for them especially if they are undecided about their future career.
