Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. When someone hears that someone has breast cancer or other cancers, you might not know what to say. Additionally, you might not know what to do to help and how to give support. The first thought that comes to mind is fear of losing a friend or relative that has breast cancer. The second thought that comes to mind is how to help out.
Begin by reading and understanding what is breast cancer. Breast cancer affects men and women. Younger women and younger men can also get breast cancer which is unusual. But, it can occur if there is a family history and other health factors that cause breast cancer. Additionally, read about the different types of treatments for breast cancer.
The more informed you are, you will be able to give support to someone who is going through breast cancer. Another way to give support is by donating to the Susan G. Komen organization. Since 1982, this organization has donated to the community, research, and programs to find a cure for breast cancer. Also, for every t-shirt that is purchased, all profits are donated. You can wear a pink t-shirt to give support to a friend or relative who is going through breast cancer.
Besides donating to the Susan G. Komen organization, you can donate to the City of Hope. The City of Hope is an institution that does research about cancer and other diseases. Also, both the City of Hope and Susan G. Komen have resources about cancer. If you have breast cancer, you can also wear a pink t-shirt during your treatments. In this way, you will bring awareness to do mammograms, self-examinations, and annual checkups.
You can also donate your gently used clothes to the American Cancer society shops. Used clothing such as prom dresses, wedding dresses, or ball gown dresses can be donated to these shops. Another way is by donating your long hair to Locks of Love. Your hair will be used for wigs. Additionally, you can donate to St. Jude where all donations help children with cancer.
For now, there is no cure for breast cancer and other cancers. You can also join a walking marathon to give support. Last, you can join a support group with your family and friends. A support group will help you have a positive mindset to cope with someone's breast cancer. Here are more resources about breast cancer.
