Opera began in Italy, and it spread throughout Europe. In some operas, only men would take part in the opera and would do the female roles. However, there were operas with sopranos or female opera singers. Sometimes they would wear masks to sing in the opera. Also, opera became popular in China with added elements of acrobatics, dance, and other instruments.

Chinese opera included the gong, the lute, and Erhu. The Erhu is a two-string instrument like a fiddle. Opera was sung in Cantonese, Mandarin, and other languages throughout China. The stories for the operas were from Ancient Greek and mythology. Later the opera stories evolved into real people and historical events.
