Behavioral Addictions and Relationships

Behavioral addictions consist of doing something as an impulse. These addictions are repeated every day and can severely hurt a relationship. One behavioral addiction is exercising too much. When one partner exercises more than the other partner, the relationship is neglected. Additionally, their partner might feel left out and feel their needs are not fulfilled.

Another behavioral addiction is food addiction. Having a food addiction affects a person emotionally and physically. When one partner eats more than the other partner, the intimate aspect of the relationship might be difficult. Also, the compulsive eater might lose their desire for intimacy in the relationship. Food becomes a fixation for a temporary solution and for avoiding certain issues in the relationship.

Behavioral addictions are complex and difficult to comprehend. When addictions are developed, a person withdraws from their general activities and repeatedly does actions that are harmful for them. Addictions can begin after a traumatic event, too much negativity in their environment, and as an unconscious effect. Additionally, some addictions are genetically unloaded when stress levels are too high and as an emotional response.

For example, a shopping addiction can occur when a person is emotionally distressed from their relationship. He or she will have an impulsive need to purchase items that might be unnecessary. Sometimes, a person is not satisfied in their relationship with their partner. Depending on the type of behavioral addiction the person might have, he or she can be treated with individual counseling, individual therapy, hypnotherapy, or couple therapy. Often meditation is incorporated into the treatment to help the person recover from their addiction.

Meditation is used to end the cravings and to control the emotions that make the person activate the addiction. Practice loving kindness meditation by yourself and with your partner. If your partner has a behavioral addiction, you must give them support with your patience. Accompany them to their therapy sessions with a professional therapist or psychologist.
