Dental Care & Diabetes (National Dental Care Month)

Dental care is important at any month of the year. However, in May the entire month is dedicated to taking care of your oral health. It is fundamental to take care of your teeth and gums when you have diabetes. Also, taking care of a dry mouth. Use a water flosser to clean in between your teeth.

A water flosser is a good way to remove leftover food from your teeth. Yet, if you do not have a water flosser, you can use a dental floss pick. Slowly place the dental floss pick between each tooth to pick up leftover food. Make sure the dental floss pick is not too rough. If the dental floss pick is too hard it will make your gums bleed.

Keep a traveling toothbrush and toothpaste with you even when you are not traveling. A traveling toothbrush and toothpaste make you have a good dental care habit. Establish good dental care habits by making a dental kit for your purse or bag. Tell your dentist you have diabetes to prevent losing a tooth and to prevent a dry mouth. Use Biotene products for a dry mouth.

If you have dentures, clean them every day. If you need to keep track of your brushing habit, there is an app that has a timer by Oral-B. Having diabetes should not stop you from taking care of your teeth and gums. Happy National Dental Care Month! Here are links with more information on dental care.
