Negative Body Image & Relationships

A  negative body image affects your relationships physically, emotionally, and socially. Insecurities, no self-confidence, and no self-esteem contribute to a negative body image. This creates problematic decisions when choosing your partner. Often women do not see themselves as beautiful. However, their partner sees them as beautiful with and without cosmetics.

But if their partner is not supportive, body issues and negative thinking gets worse. Eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, and an obsession with looks may occur. Excessive exercise and even considering surgery without needing it for health reasons is an indication of having a negative body image. Nevertheless pessimistic thoughts regarding body image cause pain, depression, and not feeling secure in a relationship. Consequently,  an unsupportive partner might make you feel worse about your body.

Having a supportive partner can help you have a positive body image. Also, accepting that your body goes through several changes as you get older. Additionally, you must accept your genetics. Yet there are ways to avoid having a negative body image so you can fully enjoy your relationship with your partner. Here is a brief list.

  1. Ignore the professional brush-up or retouched pictures that you see on social media.
  2. Dress suitably and choose colors that make you feel effervescent.
  3. Change the word “fat” from your mind to a constructive word that describes your body.
  4. Speak to your partner about your insecurities.
  5. Seek professional counseling if you feel inadequate with your body image.
  6. Do not allow anyone to tell you fat jokes or negative body image jokes.
  7. Do not criticize yourself or anyone about their body image.
  8. Practice meditation, a new hobby, a new skill, or something to avoid thinking bad about yourself.
  9. Do not compare yourself to actresses/actors that you see in movies or on television.
  10. Do not hide in your clothes and do wear well-fitted clothes.

Make sure your partner is supportive and makes you feel good about yourself. Stay away from people that tell you negative comments about your body. If you do hear a negative comment about how you look, ignore it, and change the subject. If your partner does negative comments about your body, discuss how it makes you feel. Here are links about body image and how to overcome a negative body image.

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Although Mental Health Awareness Month is in May, the entire month of July is committed to minority mental health. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was recognized in 2008 because of Bebe Moore Campbell. Bebe Moore Campbell was a mental health supporter because her daughter battled with mental illness. She was also an American author, journalist, and teacher who authored books about the pains of racism. Additionally, she became an advocate for minorities until she passed away in 2006.

It is difficult to find the correct resources for mental health, especially as a minority. The reasons for not finding the appropriate resources are endless. Sadly, racism continues because of height, skin color, facial appearances, and accents. Often the discrimination is so high that minorities feel more anxiety, depression, and have other mental health issues. Moreover, only a small percentage of minorities receive the proper treatment for mental health services.

Since the pandemic racism, discrimination, and fear have risen towards minorities. However, those negative feelings need to end. Everyone should be respected. Find a professional therapist, seek counseling, and do not quit on reaching your goals. Below are links about National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

Back-to-School Relaxation Techniques

Going back to school always brings a sense of excitement and jitters. To calm down your nerves and your child's nervousness,  you can practice these relaxation techniques.  Depending on your child's age, you can do meditation specifically for helping them go to sleep early before school starts. The Calm app has a section for children which is called "Calm Kids". You will find sleep stories for their age level.

If they are still having problems sleeping, they can do stretching exercises before going to sleep.  However, if your child likes to color, he or she can color one or two pages before going to sleep. Also, your child can read positive affirmations or write down affirmations on the back of their new notebook. These affirmations should motivate them to study and do their homework. Here is a shortlist of positive affirmations.

1. I am doing my best to learn new things in school.

2. I am special and creative.

3. I will try to get an A, B, and a C in my school work.

4. If I do not get too many A's, it will still be good for my learning experience.

5. I am unique and will make new friendships.

6. I might be shy but I am kind to others.

7. I will ask for help with a smile when I do not understand my homework.

8. I am working hard to pay attention, to listen carefully, and to be honest.

You can additionally write down motivational quotes on the back of the notebook. Your child can read the affirmations and quotes for motivational reference. Start a routine so your child can relax for five minutes before doing homework. Listen to music, read a funny book, and play game boards as a family. Here are links with more tips for back-to-school relaxation techniques.

Pearl rings can accessorize any white dress or any summer dress for picnics and other summer events. However, if you want to make your pearl rings, you will like this tutorial. Pearl rings can be made in less than five minutes. All you need are blank rings, pearls, and glue to make your handmade rings. Here is the tutorial for making this handmade ring.

Instructions:

Begin by cleaning the pearl and the blank ring. Make sure it is dry and dust free. Then, with a pair of pliers open the edges surrounding the top part of the ring. Make sure you do not get Krazy glue on your hand. After that use, your fingers to press the pearl and the ring for a few minutes. Parsley Cauliflower Rice Bowl

Eating a power bowl once or twice a month is an easy way to incorporate more vegetables and protein into your diet. It also changes the flavor of leftover chicken and makes your meals look different. You and your family will enjoy the taste of the entire meal by mixing different flavors in a bowl. This power bowl has parsley, leftover chicken, cauliflower rice, and other vegetables. There is no sauce although you can add soy sauce or teriyaki sauce.

Cauliflower rice is cooked cauliflower that is cut and shaped to look like rice. It makes an excellent substitute if you are allergic to rice or if you are controlling your sugar levels. Also, it has fewer calories if you are counting calories. Frozen cauliflower rice was used in this recipe to make it quicker. It is high in fiber, has antioxidants, and may help with weight loss.

No matter how you eat this power bowl, you will like the flavor of the parsley and other spices. Parsley has vitamin K and it has blood thinning properties. Therefore, use parsley in moderation. Yet, you can use cilantro instead of parsley.  Here is the recipe for making this parsley cauliflower rice bowl.

Ingredients:

Frozen cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli

Bell peppers

Onions

Mushrooms

1 packet of chicken tenderloins

Frozen cauliflower rice

1 can of beans or a bag of beans

Garlic cloves

Spices:

Lemon and Pepper

Goya cilantro and tomato bouillon

Goya chicken bouillon

Garlic powder

Tajin Chile and lime powder

Curry

1 Lemon

Preparation and cooking time:

Wash and slice the bell peppers. Clean the mushrooms before slicing them. Peel the onion and use half of the onion. Slice one-half of the onions to add to the chicken and the other half into the beans. Save the other half of the onion for another recipe.

In one skillet, add bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Add the following spices to the chicken tenderloins: Lemon and pepper, curry, garlic powder, chile lime powder, and cilantro with tomato bouillon powder. Next, cook everything in the skillet with water. Last, squeeze one lemon and add the lemon juice when the water had evaporated.  Add parsley leaves or cilantro leaves to cook the chicken.

Then, in a pot with water, add chicken bouillon powder with the frozen cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli. Add parsley or cilantro with the frozen vegetables. However, you can cook the chicken with parsley and the frozen vegetables with cilantro. Depending on your preference, parsley, and cilantro leaves blend well together. While that is cooking, add slices of onions, bell pepper, and peeled garlic cloves in a pot with dry beans or cooked beans from a can.

If you are using dry beans add plenty of water. Wait until everything is soft and tender. Microwave the frozen cauliflower rice and wait one minute before serving. Use a serving spoon with a strainer to serve the beans and vegetables without the broth. In a bowl, add cauliflower rice, beans, vegetables, and shredded chicken.

Last, add soy sauce or teriyaki sauce to your parsley cauliflower rice bowl. Also, you can garnish your bowl with parsley or cilantro which is optional. You can also eat this power bowl without sauce. Nonetheless, you can vary your vegetables to make your cauliflower rice bowls. Here are links about making your power bowls.

Anti-Boredom Month

It is National Anti-Boredom Month! Looking for ways to get out of your monotony of your summer routine can be problematic. The long summer days of doing the same repetitive activities can bring on boredom to any child and to an older adult. Therefore, a change of scenery, learning a recent activity, or working on old, abandoned hobbies can be effective for your health. It is normal to feel boredom once a month but not all the time.

Your mental health is affected when it is in a state of boredom. The consequence of boredom leads to a deeper depression, more anxiety, and more fears of loneliness. It is recommended that outdoor activities should be done to let go of the feelings that boredom might bring. Yet, make sure you feel safe when beginning a new outdoor activity such as learning how to use a scooter, learning how to ski, or any other activity that requires your full attention. Also, doing group activities takes away some of the loneliness that is brought on by boredom.

However, boredom can also occur when there is no motivation to do outdoor activities, not enough sleep, and lack of mental stimulation. Break away from your typical routine and try something new to feel mental stimulation. Do activities that make you feel creative and encouraged. Take online or social media breaks to enjoy the summer days. Here are more resources for anti-boredom month and for your mental health.

DIY Embroidery Flower Picture Frame

This embroidery project is easy to do for a beginner or an intermediate expert. Using leftover denim and embroidery floss, this project will take one or two days to do. You can use this embroidered picture frame to decorate your office, bedroom, or any small space in your home. You will enjoy displaying your embroidery in a picture frame. Here is the tutorial for this embroidery project.

Materials:

4 X 6 Frame

Embroidery thread/floss

Embroidery needle

Leftover denim fabric

Scissors

First, make sure you have enough denim fabric to cover an entire picture frame. Next, use a circle stencil to trace a circle. This will be the base of the flower. Then insert embroidery floss into an embroidery needle. After the circle is complete, use a different color to create the flower petals.

Once the flower petals are embroidered, continue making different embroidery stitches. Make sure the embroidery is not too thick. Keep the thread as thin as possible so it can lay flat in the picture frame. Continue embroidering the stem and the leaves of the flower. After everything is embroidered, trim the leftover floss with scissors.

Then use your frame to outline the edges of the leftover fabric. Trim the leftover fabric with scissors. Embroider your initials on the side of the embroidery. Carefully insert the fabric into the picture frame. Now you can display your embroidery or give it as a gift.

Guilt & Meditation

According to Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab, "No amount of guilt can change the past, no amount of worrying can change the future." Guilt is a state of sadness. Although having guilt is a negative feeling, it can have a positive effect. It is normal to have feelings of shame, remorse, worry, and other emotions in relationships. Yet, these emotions need to be under control to have healthy relationships.

Meditation can help you be free of guilt from past experiences in relationships. Every time you have a new romantic relationship with someone, the guilt from the past usually crawls into the new relationship. Sometimes guilt shows up within the first or second year of marriage. This does not mean that love has faded away in the relationship. Yet, fear, uncertainties, and pain make the guilt take over your thoughts.

Controlling your guilt and other emotions make you enjoy your new or current romantic relationship. Meditation lessens the feelings of guilt by identifying the emotions that cause pain and embarrassment. It does not make you avoid these feelings, but it makes you feel comfortable in expressing how you feel. If the emotion of guilt is not solved, it will make it difficult to healthy relationships. Therefore, meditation is often used in therapy sessions to help with bad behavioral habits.

Practice loving-kindness meditation, mindful eating, meditation walks, yoga, and other meditation techniques to release guilt. Listen to guided meditation to let go of the guilt. If this does not work, write down how you feel in a journal. Speak with a therapist to find ways in dealing with guilt in your romantic relationship. Here are more resources for reducing guilt in your relationships.

National Cell Phone Courtesy Month

Every day you can see people on their cell phones in the waiting room at a doctor's office. Additionally, at school cafeterias, diners, and other public places. Often the person sitting next to you can hear the whole conversation with the speaker turned on. Sometimes you will see a person on the cell phone while purchasing their items with the cashier. Yet, all of this cell phone use has made more people lack manners and courtesy towards others.

Therefore, the whole month of July is devoted to cell phone use and courtesy. You do not have to be a secretary to follow cell phone etiquette in your daily routine. However, it is suggested to speak slowly and clearly when you speak to someone on the cell phone. Keep in mind some businesses continue using landlines which makes it difficult to hear. Here are some tips to do cell phone etiquette.

1. Silence your cell phone when you are walking the dog, walking on the streets, and when you are driving.

2. Do not put a person on the speaker without their permission.

3. Do not text while crossing the street and while you are driving.

4. Silence your cell phone when you are eating with the family.

5. Let all your telephone calls go to voicemail especially when you are in a public place.

6. If your family members need to know where you are, send them a quick text message before leaving your home.

7. Leave a handwritten note to your family members who do not text message before you leave your home.

8. Make sure your cell phone is silent in public places especially when it is too noisy to speak to someone on the cell phone.

9. Leave a voice mail in a quiet area where there is no traffic noise, freeway noise, and echoes.

10. Turn off the television, the radio, or any other electronic device while leaving a voice mail.

11. Take advantage of timing your text messages in advance especially when you know your family members or friends' weekly work schedules.

12. Use a spam blocker for cell phone calls and text messages.

13. Keep your personal cell phone conversations short during work hours.

14. Use headphones when it is appropriate to speak to someone on the cell phone.

15. Make sure you can hear the person when you are using headphones.

Do not shout on the cell phone. Call back the person or restart your cell phone if the person has difficulty hearing you on the cell phone. Following these suggestions will make life less complicated. Furthermore, you will feel safe while you are driving or walking outside. Here are resources for National Cell Phone Courtesy Month.

National Culinary Arts Month

The whole month of July is National Culinary Arts Month. This month is dedicated to professional chefs. Yet, this month is also about culinary skills, creativity, and level of expertise in cooking. Anyone who loves to cook can be an amateur chef at home. Although you are not a professional chef, you can still celebrate National Culinary Arts Month at home.

Learn new recipes at home, make your recipes, and read cookbooks to vary the ingredients of your meals. If you like to cook chicken, you can learn several ways to cook chicken and incorporate it with vegetables, salads, or soups. Keep in mind that chicken lasts three to four days in the refrigerator depending on what spices and citrus fruits you used to preserve the flavor of the chicken. Additionally, you can read about the health benefits of vegetables, salads, and fruits. Here is a recipe for this curry chicken which has been one of my favorite recipes.

Ingredients:

Lemon and Pepper spice

Garlic Powder

Curry

Oregano

Ginger

Bell Peppers

½ of White or Yellow Onions

Mixed Baby Greens

Frozen Mixed Vegetables

Cucumbers

Tomatoes

Red Apples

Lemon

Preparation & Cooking Time:

Begin by removing the fat from the chicken. Add the spices and lemon juice. After that cook, the chicken in water with the sliced bell peppers and sliced onions. Use a lid to cook the chicken in a skillet or a pot. While the chicken is cooking, prepare the salad by slicing the cucumbers and tomatoes.

Add the sliced cucumbers and tomatoes to the salad. Use the mixed baby salad greens with the cucumbers and tomatoes. The cucumbers are optional. Add sliced apples to the salad when the chicken is fully cooked. Use mixed vegetables as a side dish.

When you are ready to serve the chicken, microwave the mixed vegetables. In a small cup, add the mixed vegetables. This meal serves two or three people. Refrigerate the chicken, vegetables, and salad separately. Use your favorite salad dressing to make your chicken salad.

You can also view television shows to learn culinary skills from professional chefs. Read about the new kitchen items that will help you prepare your food quickly and efficiently. Thank the waitress if you are dining outside of your home. Make a recipe binder for your favorite meals. Here are links that can be useful for your culinary arts reading.

Reduce Plastic Waste at Home

Courtesy Image from Plastic Free July Organization

Plastic Free July brings awareness of how much plastic is used at home, at work, at school, and in your everyday life. If you do not know how to begin the process of using less plastic, you can take a quiz at the Plastic Free July website. The Pesky Plastics Quiz takes less than five minutes to complete, and you will receive an e-mail. The entire website is filled with tips on how to reduce plastic waste. Begin slowly by eliminating plastic in your home.

Refuse plastic straws when you order take-out meals. Purchase plant-based or compostable materials for your family picnics. Also, try to shop locally at a Farmer's market with your reusable bags. Avoid purchasing your sauce, jelly, and other condiments in plastic containers. Additionally, purchase your television microwave dinners in compostable material.

Avoid using plastic bags when purchasing your vegetables. Reuse your plastic containers for your plants, bird feeders, and for making crafts. Try to purchase your clothes with natural fibers whenever it is possible. If you like to chew gum, buy chewing gum with natural ingredients. Chewing gum has plastic that is used to make plastic water bottles.

Therefore, avoid purchasing your drinks in plastic bottles. Try to purchase your drinks and other food items in glass or plant-based compostable materials. It might seem like a challenge to avoid using plastic. However, in July and each month of the year, you will be able to reduce plastic waste. Here is the link for Plastic Free July.
