How to Avoid Holiday Stress?

The holidays are a joyful, reminiscent, and reflective time. Yet, having so much to do can be tiring. To avoid holiday burnout, you must set some time for yourself. Make a list of things that need to be done within a week. Eliminate certain items from your list to make time for yourself.

Planning family gatherings is stressful. Do not worry about making everything perfect. Make a small family gathering and make an entertainment schedule. Limit the sugar and alcoholic items in your meal plans. Add a variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

If you plan on giving gifts, you can ask them what item they want the most for Christmas. Give one gift per person to stay on your budget. Make a shopping list of the people you want to give a gift to. Also, you can make handmade items such as a family scrapbook, a gift basket, or a fun book to read. Set a schedule for your online shopping.

Make sure you are at home to pick up your packages. After you are done wrapping the gifts, take a few minutes to relax. Do a gratitude meditation, laughter meditation, or guided meditation. Practice yoga or stretching exercises. Get plenty of sleep.

Do not forget to buy a gift for yourself such as a new sweater, t-shirt, or something you will enjoy. Set a family time limit. Avoid discussing emotional topics during your family gatherings. If you are feeling sad, speak to a therapist or a psychologist. Here are links about avoiding holiday burnout.

Study Tips & Dyslexia

Studying with dyslexia can sometimes be frustrating for a student no matter how old he or she is. Someone with dyslexia can be a slow reader. Other times he or she might read too quickly and does not comprehend what was read. Nevertheless, there are study methods for learning what is read and how to memorize the information. Sometimes, a tutor can help the student how to organize and study for tests. Also, a parent can teach their child how to study, how to read, and how to spell words.

Every year in October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. The International Dyslexia Association uses red to bring awareness for Dyslexia. However, the color silver is also used to bring awareness for dyslexia. Dyslexia occurs because of genetic factors, alcohol or drug use during pregnancy, or an infection that changes the development of the brain in a fetus. Dyslexia has three levels which can be diagnosed at school through some comprehension, spelling, writing, and other evaluation tests.

Dyslexia can be mild, moderate, or severe. Once the dyslexia is diagnosed through the school psychologist or a speech-language professional, he or she will learn how to study based on their level. Dyslexia affects reading, writing, spelling, and speaking. One study method is by organizing your notes. Use color pens to identify the important information for school tests.

Also, use index cards and write the information with colored pens. If your professor gives a study guide, carefully read and take notes with the study guide. Read the entire chapter of the book and use removable color tabs. Use a dictionary to correct your spelling. Besides writing your school notes, type your notes and use the spell checker.

Additionally, have a school classmate take notes for you and give the notes to you after class. Another way is by having a recording of the class lecture. If the class is on Zoom, you can ask for a recording of the class lecture. By replaying the lecture, you will find information that you previously missed when taking your class notes. Make sure your notes are organized.

Once you make studying a habit, you will find it less frustrating to read and take notes. Dyslexia should not prevent you from getting a degree or a career. The more aware you are about your learning skills, you will be able to deal with dyslexia. Furthermore, you will learn new ways to study and will be able to study better. Below are links about studying and dyslexia.

Mental Health & The Holidays

The holidays are always a stressful time and taking care of your mental health makes it more difficult. Often you might feel sad during family gatherings. Other times, you might want alone time for yourself when you are with your family. It is natural to feel this way especially if you are in the grieving process, the stress from the pandemic, or dealing with seasonal depression. First, keep a journal to write down your emotions.

Second, be aware of how other people make you feel during the holidays. Also, if you do not have enough money to buy gifts for the family, you can buy one gift for the entire family. Furthermore, explain to the family that your budget is less due to the pandemic. Another way is by making handmade gifts such as a family scrapbook, a friendship bracelet, or something small to give as a gift. Additionally, you can help in the kitchen by preparing the family meals together.

Third, spend time doing volunteer work. Donate your time and donate gently used items to charity. Doing something for others will make you feel good about yourself. Take care of your physical health and practice self-care for your mental health. Do not abuse alcohol, medications, or other substances during the holidays.

Stay away from family chaos. Practice meditation, mindfulness, or exercise to help you relax. Do not attend too many family or social gatherings. Avoid eating too much and eat healthy as possible during the holidays. Here are more resources about taking care of your mental health during the holidays.

Effects of Alcohol

Alcoholism is a difficult topic to explain to your family members and friends. Yet, more people are becoming alcoholic since the pandemic. Since the pandemic eighty percent of college age students abused alcohol consumption. Alcohol has destroyed family relationships, friendships, and social interactions as a society. It severely damages the brain by changing a person’s behaviors, actions, and in pairs the body from functioning well.

If the person is an alcoholic and has a mental health issue, he or she will feel worse. Alcohol does not make a person feel better about forgetting their problems. A person might get more aggressive, more sensitive, and grouchier. The brain will end up shrinking with more alcohol and more blackouts occur frequently. The person might have nerve damage due to the excess of alcohol as well as having difficulties in speaking.

Consuming alcohol as an escape tool is not good for the brain, the nervous system, and for the organs. The organ affected is the liver which is a difficult organ to find for transplants. The other organs affected is the heart, pancreas, and the esophagus. Alcohol also affects fertility for men and women. A person can recover from alcoholism over time while the addiction will always be there in the brain. Here are more resources about alcoholism.

Word stencil from Suncatcher Studio

Embroidery thread

Embroidery needle

1 Baseball cap

Washable fabric marker

Commitment and Gamophobia

Commitment is challenging for someone who has gamophobia. If a person has untreated gamophobia, he or she stays in a relationship without having a commitment. Often a person who is not aware of having gamophobia gets nervous, scared, and anxious. He or she changes the subject when the word commitment is in the conversations. Other times a person might want to be in a friend plus relationship or in a relationship that does not require commitment.

For a person to be in a committed relationship, the person must let go of their fears of marriage. If a person had a trauma, an unpleasant experience during childhood, or saw their parents divorce, might make him or her re-think about being in a committed relationship. He or she might still want to be in a relationship to fulfill their physical and emotional needs. Yet might not get an attachment to the other person. If the person does get an emotional attachment with their partner, he or she might still back out of being in a meaningful relationship.

Before being in a committed relationship, a person with untreated gamophobia also must think positively about being in the relationship with their partner. He or she needs to eliminate the words, failure, mistakes, wrong, and other negative words that come to mind. Additionally, he or she must be willing to be open to the thought of being in a committed relationship with their current girlfriend or boyfriend. Furthermore, he or she must let go of negative childhood experiences from their parents who went through a divorce. The key is letting go of the fears.

Simply knowing that their parents went through a divorce, he or she might believe that their committed relationship might end in a divorce. Sadly, statistics show that seventy percent of most married couples with divorced parents do get divorced within months or less than a year. However, every thirty-six seconds a married couple ends up divorced no matter if their parents stayed married. Therefore, with the help of a counselor, a person with untreated gamophobia can overcome their fear gradually with their current boyfriend or girlfriend. As the therapy sessions progress, he, or she with gamophobia might want to live with their boyfriend or girlfriend or might want to take the step of getting married.

When the person is ready to be in a committed relationship, he or she might ask themselves questions about why they want to be with their boyfriend or girlfriend. If he or she answers the questions honestly, the fear might gradually disappear overtime. However, if being in the relationship is out of convenience, deception, or just to fulfill certain needs, the fear of marriage will be stronger. Moreover, a person with or untreated gamophobia must be willing to change and let go of the fear of marriage. Here are resources about commitment and gamophobia.

Mealtime Tips for Caregivers (Alzheimer's Awareness Month)

Every year in November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s takes a lot of patience. It is difficult to know what types of foods he or she might want to eat. Often the person with Alzheimer’s might not want to eat that much. Towards the end of the disease, the person loses his or her appetite.

It is a stressful time for the caregiver and the entire family. It is recommended that in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, the person should eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Additionally, he or she should consume lean meats, lean chicken, or anything that is grilled with less cooking oil. His or her doctor might recommend a specific diet with low sodium, low sugar, and healthy meals for the heart. As well as foods with less cholesterol.

Keep in mind the portion sizes for the person you are taking care of. He or she will have a smaller appetite as Alzheimer’s progress. The caregiver might want to use smaller lightweight plates and lightweight utensils. Do not force the person to eat the food that is served. He or she might not want to eat at the same time as the caregiver.

Mealtimes should not be frustrating for the caregiver and the entire family. Yet, it is hard to predict when the person with Alzheimer’s wants to eat or drink something. Listen to him or her. The doctor might recommend having him or her on an eating and drinking schedule. If you have any concerns about their appetite, ask his or her doctor about appetite loss, loss of sense of smell, medications, and other worries you might have as a caregiver.

Make it comfortable for him or her to eat one item at a time during mealtimes. Do not have any electronics or anything that might distract him or her from eating and drinking. Expect to see a messier table during mealtimes but do not get upset with him or her. You might need to explain to him or her what he or she is eating and drinking. Here are resources for taking care of a person with Alzheimer’s.

How to Trust in a New Relationship?

Trust is a major issue when you are in a relationship with someone. After being cheated on for so many times or even cheated once might make a person be distrustful in their next relationship. Pistanthrophobia is a term used for someone is afraid and does not trust their current boyfriend or girlfriend. This fear of not trusting your current partner causes you to worry, doubt, and question your partner’s actions. Not only will you question your partner’s actions, but you will also question if he or she is telling you the truth with their words.

Consequently, this might make you look insecure, immature, or lack relationship skills. Yet, your partner will not understand your jealousy and anxiety caused from past relationships. Often the person that was betrayed in the past will go to extremes by checking on their partner’s cell phones, e-mails, and paper mail correspondence. Dealing with Pistanthrobia is not easy and takes time to overcome it. Therefore, therapy from a therapist or a psychologist will help immensely to feel trust and be open with one’s feelings in a relationship.

To trust your new partner, you must let go of your past which takes time to do. It takes time because of the brain’s memory of how it felt when it was with the old partner. Sometimes, a person will find another person that is like their ex which will bring old memories. Keep in mind that your new partner might have similar qualities like your ex, but has different feelings, different attitudes, and different personalities. Be honest with yourself, forgive, and have an open mind with your new relationship

Take care of yourself and let go of negative thoughts that come to your mind. Practice mindfulness, meditation, or your favorite hobbies to help you relax. Also, speak to your new partner and tell them about your experience. This will help you and your new partner to understand your concerns, worries, and doubts with your new relationship. Here are links with more information about pistanthrobia.

Ways to Reduce Stress (National Stress Awareness Day)

There are many ways to reduce your stress that are beneficial for your health. You can positively reduce your stress and feel better. Often drinking too much alcohol does not help you to relieve your stress. It makes you feel relaxed temporarily. Additionally, you lose your concentration.

You can play games online to keep your mind busy. Games such as puzzles, word searches, and mazes help you focus.  Exercising with a jump rope, lifting weights, jogging, or walking helps you to feel less stressed out. Playing solitaire for twenty or thirty minutes helps to calm your mind. Stop smoking cigarettes to reduce your anxiety.

Going to a steam bath is a relaxing way to lower your stress. Singing or humming to your favorite song makes you feel better. Listen to music and exercise at home. Spend some time alone to do self-care activities. Here are links to more resources for lowering your stress.

Preventing Diabetes is Within Your Reach (Diabetes Month)

Courtesy Image from NIDDK

Today is the beginning of Diabetes Month. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, this year’s Diabetes theme is “Small Steps, Big Difference: Preventing diabetes is within reach.” Prediabetes can begin at the age of eighteen years old. Managing prediabetes is tricky especially when there are factors that make the sugar levels rise. Factors such as age, menstruation, being overweight, and poor eating habits.

Also, if there is a family history of diabetes, it makes it so difficult to manage prediabetes. Changing your diet and limiting certain foods that raise your sugar might help. Additionally, going outside for a walk or doing exercise indoors helps manage sugar levels. Besides that, drinking more water and less sugary drinks might help. Substituting rice for cauliflower rice will help enormously especially if you like to eat rice.

If you are a pasta lover, you can substitute pasta for zucchini or squash noodles. Your doctor can give you a diet plan of vegetables, protein, fiber, whole grains, and fruits. Last, your doctor can prescribe medication and a diabetes monitor. Checking your sugar with the diabetes monitor will make you aware of what type of foods raise your sugar or what types of foods that lower your sugar. Exercise is also important for managing your sugar levels. Here is a link from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
