What is Manuary?

Growing a beard in January can bring awareness to head and neck cancer. This form of cancer affects men more than women and spreads in the mouth, nose, throat, sinuses, salivary glands, and other parts of the head and neck. Manuary begins every January to bring an understanding of head and neck cancer. This cause began in 2010 to grow a beard for head and neck cancer awareness. Furthermore, growing and taking care of a beard can start a conversation about head and neck cancer awareness.

Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month takes place in April of every year. The colors white and burgundy are used in awareness ribbons for head and neck cancer. This type of cancer can be prevented by not smoking tobacco because tobacco increases the risk. Other risk factors are alcohol and not getting treatment for HPV. Manuary is like Movember.

Movember began in 2003 which brings awareness to prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and other forms of cancer in November. Movember makes everyone have conversations by growing a mustache for certain cancers and suicide prevention. In contrast, Manuary is about growing a beard, taking pictures with the beard, and having a conversation about head and neck cancer. As well as knowing the risk factors of head and neck cancer and getting screened for cancer. You can participate by growing a beard or encourage your male friend, partner, or dad to grow a beard for Manuary.

Also, women can participate in this cause by adding researched information about head and neck cancer on social media. Donating to the Head and Neck Cancer Foundation or the Head and Neck Alliance. Additionally, get screened for cancer and consult with your primary doctor about the risk factors of head and neck cancer. Limit the amount of processed raw meat and quit alcohol and get examined for HPV. Encourage your husband, male partner, or your son to go to their yearly physical exam.

Taking care of a beard and growing a beard is more than a symbol of feeling attractive. It can make you have a conversation with your wife, girlfriend, or your male spouse about cancer without feeling ashamed. Men over fifty are often diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Last, wear burgundy and white to bring awareness of head and neck cancer. Here are websites about growing a beard for Manuary and the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance website.
