Preparing for a Rainstorm

Preparing for a rainstorm takes a lot of planning. Make sure you have a family emergency plan for a heavy rainstorm. Create a checklist to ensure that everything is protected from the heavy rainstorm. Also, close all doors, and windows, and make sure patio furniture is away from trees. Trim trees and other plants before the rainstorm.

Sign up for weather alerts. Be alert to weather reports in your area. Additionally, add extra blankets to keep you warm while you stay at home. If your area gets evacuated, know the nearest shelter to go to. If you are traveling, find the nearest shelter, hotel, or motel to spend the night while you wait for the storm to end.

However, if you are at home during the rainstorm; Make sure you have enough food and water supply. Make an emergency kit with a battery-operated radio, extra batteries, raincoats, umbrellas, snacks, sanitation supplies, band aids, medications, and other items. Include flashlights and battery-operated candles in your rainstorm kit. Furthermore, have a fire extinguisher ready for an emergency. Create a pet safety plan in case your pet is not allowed at the evacuation shelter.

Try to remain calm before and during the rainstorm. Do not take a shower during a thunderstorm. Keep your cell phone on battery saver. If there is a lot of thunder at night; Turn off your cell phone while you are sleeping. As well as turning off all electronics that use electricity before a thunderstorm.

Notify your family and friends that your cell phone will be turned off during the thunderstorm. Use a hand crank weather radio. Prepare meals that do not require heat from an oven or stove. Keep yourself busy without electronics and have board games, puzzles, or card games. Here are resources for preparing for a rainstorm.
