Each year, approximately five million people are diagnosed with epilepsy. There are many types of seizures which affect the brain, and each seizure looks and feels different. However, having epilepsy does not stop you from working and completing job duties. Yet, it is necessary to reduce stress with epilepsy by getting enough sleep, listening to music, meditating, journaling, and breathing exercises. The entire month of November is dedicated to National Epilepsy Awareness.
In addition to reducing stress through meditation, journals, and breathing exercises; One can practice movement meditation by stretching and mindfulness meditation. Although more research needs to be done, meditation is helpful for reducing stress with epilepsy because meditation makes one to be more self-aware. As well as reducing anxiety that one might have and from worrying about getting a seizure. Nonetheless, there are seizures that make one lose consciousness, involuntary laughing, involuntary crying, and body movements from the head, arms, or legs. Always consult with your doctor before practicing mindfulness meditation or other forms of meditation.
Stay hydrated by drinking water, eating vegetables and fruits that have high content in water, soups, and other liquids. Have reminders to drink water and avoid alcohol. It is essential to take all your prescribed medications as well as speaking to your doctor about how to prevent epileptic seizures. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and is also known as a seizure disorder because of the brain activity and how the brain processes it. Epilepsy can make someone have a blank stare, feel confused, and uncontrollable body movements.
Yet, it is recommended that one takes care of oneself with self-care, proper nutrition, and get a medical treatment plan for epilepsy through your doctor. It is estimated that four hundred fifty-six thousand children have epilepsy, and most children are not aware of epilepsy in their schools. Devote your time this month to explain to your children about epilepsy and bring awareness of epilepsy on social media using informative images. It is important to bring awareness of epilepsy in the schools by speaking about epilepsy with teachers, nurses, and other school staff. Last, participate in epilepsy awareness fundraising initiatives that your child’s school might have or in your community.
You can wear a purple ribbon, a purple t-shirt, or a purple accessory to bring awareness of epilepsy. Pass out medical brochures about epilepsy with the permission of your child’s school to bring an understanding of epilepsy. Donate to the epilepsy foundation or other epilepsy organization. Also, decorate your home with purple butterflies or purple accessories in the form of butterflies to bring awareness of epilepsy. Here are more resources for National Epilepsy Month.
