World Listening Day & Tips
Every
year on July 18th is World Listening Day. It is a day to listen to the sounds
of nature. July 18th is also the birthday of the founder of World Listening
Day. Raymond Murray Schafer was a Canadian music educator and composer that
began World Listening Day. He is known for the World Soundscape Project and
Acoustic Ecology.
World Listening
Day is a day to bring awareness of the sounds of nature and for a better
understanding. As well as a day to practice active listening with others
and nature. One way to practice is to meditate and to walk outside while
listening to the sounds of nature. Listen to every sound and identify the
sounds. Even if you cannot identify the sound or the sounds that you hear, try
to be aware of your emotions.
Walk and stop to
listen to your surroundings. Then, walk and sit down to listen. Write about a
reflection of the sounds you hear for five minutes. After that walk and stand
up to listen. Continue writing about your walk and your emotions.
Another way is to
sit on the grass, bench, or on the floor. Listen to the sounds and draw what
you hear in your journal. Write down what you hear next to the drawings. In
addition, listen carefully and observe your surroundings. Practice breathing
techniques as you listen to the sounds.
Close your eyes
and listen to the sounds. Count the different sounds that you hear. Then open
your eyes. Write down a list of the sounds that you hear. After that write down
the number of the sounds that you hear.
Record the sounds
and playback the sounds. Avoid distractions. Practice silent walks as you
listen to nature sounds. Move your arms up and down as you do a nature walk.
Alternatively, you can play back the nature sounds as you are lying down and
visualizing the animals or other items that make the sounds.
Listen to one
sound at a time. Write sound poetry or your emotions in a poem. Plant a new
flower or a new plant in your garden as you listen to the birds sing. Also
listen to nature sounds with your partner as you hold hands. Remain in silence
as you both listen to the sounds and write a reflection of the sounds
together.
Before you go to
sleep, listen to the natural sounds. Listening to nature sounds can help you
relax and might improve your sleep. Always consult with your doctor about sleep
issues or issues in listening. Be comfortable sitting or lying down as you
listen to the sounds. Here are websites about listening.
