Child Abuse Prevention Month 2026 & Strengthening Families

Although Child Abuse Prevention Month ends on the last day of April; It is essential to continue having conversations with your children about their safety and mental wellness. Additionally, letting them know that if something or someone is bothering them, that they can speak about it without judgement. It can be challenging at times to listen to them calmly and to recognize when something is wrong. Yet, finding the responses, solutions, and the resources to help them to prevent child abuse and neglect. As well as learning to understand what your children are experiencing in school and with their extracurricular activities.

Often having too much work stress and family pressures can make it difficult to take care of your child's emotional, physical, and overall mental wellness. But it is possible to take care of your child's emotional safety, mental wellness, and balancing family life and their school activities. It is recommended to reduce your child's stress from school and from family issues. Also, it is recommended to reduce your stress as a parent. Finding a balance between work, university, and family issues can help you as a parent to encourage your children to speak up about what is bothering them.

It is necessary to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect. Families can be strengthened by receiving information about preventing child abuse and neglect at community events, schools, libraries, clinics, and hospitals. Nonetheless, monitoring your child's internet usage, social media accounts, and their cell phone especially for hidden applications. Also, looking for deleted applications. Keeping an eye on them especially if unknown people talk to them online, at school, or at a friend's home.

Be careful with how you speak with your child, especially when it comes to family issues that your child might not understand. Be aware of your child's friendships and their new friendships at school, at home, or in the neighborhood. Be alert to what you see, especially if you notice that their friend is aggressive, sad, or is afraid of being surrounded by one or more older adults. Furthermore, notice any warning signs from your child and if there are any changes with how they speak to you and other family members. Recognize any changes that you might find peculiar especially for a child's development.

Another tip is to be careful with online social media groups that teenagers might create or follow because of pressures from school friendships. Listen to how your child speaks to their cousins and other siblings as well as how they speak to your child. Verbal abuse can affect a child's emotional and mental wellness, which can be more difficult when it comes to family members that compare them to other siblings. Understand and know when it is time to distance yourself and your child from toxic family members that do verbal abuse, physical abuse, and other maltreatment. Find a balance when disciplining, monitoring, and taking care of your children.

Know when to reward your child for their achievements in school and for trying to excel in schoolwork. To prevent child abuse is possible by knowing where to get the resources, therapy, and coping with everyone's stress. Wear blue on the last day of April and place pinwheels in your garden, school garden, or as community events.
