College: Denim Day 2026



Denim Day can bring awareness in college by preventing sexual violence and sexual assault. It is a day to wear denim in college and to use the hashtag, “Denim Day in your social media. Although sexual assault is not spoken that often in college campuses, it is mentioned in the college newspaper or monthly newsletters. To bring an understanding about preventing sexual assault and sexual violence, it is necessary to talk about it with your college classmates. As well as being alert, having a whistle, and keeping an eye on your surroundings. 


Avoid being alone with someone you do not know. Also, if you notice anything that you do not feel comfortable when dating; Use an escape plan with someone you can trust. Do not force yourself to stay longer on your date, especially if it feels uncomfortable. Observing your surroundings, observing your date, and observing other's behaviors can help you notice more of what is going on. If your date is drunken, do not stay alone with them especially if they force themselves to be sexually intimate. 


It is important to be safe when you are dating in college. Additionally, understanding your date's behaviors, actions, and reactions can make you decide to be in the relationship. Do not assume that everyone in college has a healthy dating relationship. Another recommendation is to listen carefully with an open mindset and understand your comfort level when dating someone new. Wear your hair up and make sure they cannot grab your hair when you are dating. 


Besides that, avoid having harmful conversations such as jokes, comments, or excessive conversations about your body in a sexual manner. When dating in college, it is necessary to understand and know the signs of sexual violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and domestic violence. Support survivors in college by listening to them and having a support group in college. Find resources in college from the psychology department in college as well as resources from the medical clinic near your college if possible. Wear denim on the last Wednesday of April.


Give paper flowers or make paper flowers as an activity for Denim Day. Another way is to purchase Sunflowers, Calendula, and a mix of purple, white, and yellow flowers to arrange with strips of denim. Have a vase with denim fabric and make denim flowers with a note filled with affirmations or words of encouragement. Decorate an information booth with denim pens, denim clip boards, and other items that you can make with denim. Print out posters and other information for Denim Day. 


Make denim cards made out of scraps of denim in college for Denim Day. Write messages of encouragement and give the cards to survivors of sexual assault. Also, practice Yoga, Tai Chi, or other mind and body exercise in a garden area inside the college campus. Always ask for permission before having a Denim Day in college and make it a suggestion to the college committee. Practice meditation, have coloring pages with encouraging words, and give out information for Denim Day to all of the students on college campus.


Lastly, have an hour to have conversations about preventing sexual assault in your college campus. Make suggestions for college improvements for more security, adding more lights to areas that have less lighting, and take pictures of college areas that do not feel safe. Suggest more therapy programs for survivors to be heard and to feel safe in college. As well as making suggestions to add more prevention programs in college to prevent sexual assault, sexual violence, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.
