Worldwide Food Service Safety Month (December)

The full month of December is dedicated to Worldwide Food Service Safety. Although, this awareness month applies to fast food service, it can also be applied to making food at home. Most cooking dangers occur at home and at fast food services. Some cooking dangers are mishandling kitchen gadgets, using the wrong knives, and using the same chopping board. Sometimes, this might lead to food poisoning and foodborne illnesses.

Before you prepare food at home, make sure you use a different chopping board for vegetables, meats, seafood, and for breads. Choose several chopping boards with different colors to distinguish each food item. Second, make sure all the knives are safely stored and have a knife block holder. Use labels to label the pantry items that are stored in mason jars and other kitchen items. Third, use one kitchen cabinet drawer for storing potholders, kitchen towels, and your kitchen utensil set. Last, make sure everything is washed before using the items and wash your hands frequently while you are preparing food.

Wash your cutting board with dish soap and with vinegar. Rinse the cutting board. Depending on the material of your cutting board, you can also use half a lemon and salt to clean it. Replace cutting boards that have cracks and bad odors that linger after washing it several times.  Here are more resources about kitchen safety and Worldwide Food Service Safety.
