Sensory Poetry, Five Senses, and Mindfulness

Practice mindfulness through writing poetry and writing about your five senses. Writing about your five senses as you experience mindful eating, mindful touch, or mindfulness with everyday activities. As you smell, listen, see, touch, and taste, you can write a brief poem about it. It does not have to rhyme. Additionally, it helps you to express yourself through words and to share your experiences. Sensory poetry is written in five or six sentences.

Select one topic such as foods, seasons, emotions, objects, colors, or your hobbies. Then write one sentence for each sense. After that write the sixth sentence to end the poem. Also, to add a final thought about the five senses you experienced. Although sensory poetry is practiced in high school and in college; You can practice sensory poetry with mindfulness for relaxation, creativity, and improve your writing.

Begin by asking yourself questions about sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Explore your surroundings and use your senses as you practice mindfulness. For example, drink or eat something as you write down your experiences while using your senses. Then use similes and metaphors to describe your senses. In the example below, you can read about mint leaves.

Besides practicing mindful eating or mindful drinking, you can practice mindful listening and mindful touch. The more you practice mindfulness, the more aware you will be of your senses. Additionally, you can write sensory poetry with your partner and share each other's poetry. Practice breathing techniques as you slowly write your poetry. Lastly write the first thoughts that come to mind when writing your sensory poems.

After you have practiced writing several sensory poems,  you might want to read them or hang them to your art wall gallery. Nonetheless, you can read your poetry during a work break or whenever you are looking for inspiration. Sensory poetry can help you reduce your stress and can be helpful for practicing mindfulness.
