Internet Safety Tips for Children, Teens, & Adults


It is important to inform your children and teens about Internet safety for their peace of mind and yours. It is beneficial to speak to them about the importance of not posting private information online. Also, making them aware of the dangers of being on certain applications on their cellphone, tablet, and computer. Monitoring your children's and your time online will help you feel more at ease. Therefore, this list should help you as a guide on how to protect your children and yourself online while having fun browsing. 

1. Keep your anti-virus program updated.
2. Change passwords frequently.
3. Do not post private information.
4. Check your  Internet privacy settings.
5. Create a screen name without your last name and birthday. 
6. Be careful what you download.
7. Avoid anything negative online. 
8. Preview or read everything before you post or publish your messages online.
9. Always backup your information.
10. Use the two-step identification for sensitive information such as your e-mail and when you log in to certain websites. 

After reviewing this list with your children and with yourself, make an online contract with them or make a poster with online safety rules. This will help them remember what they learned about Internet safety. Always delete your Internet browser cookies and history.
