Stalking Prevention in the Workplace (NSAM 2025)
Preventing stalking in the workplace is necessary for all employees to feel safe and comfortable while they are working. Yet, workplace stalking occurs, and eleven percent of employees have experienced stalking for five years or more. Being stalked reduces work productivity and causes more stress. It also affects your mental wellness when you are at work and at home. Stalking can be prevented by adding security guidelines and being alert to your surroundings.
Always communicate suspicious activities to your Human Resources Department, your supervisor, and superintendent. Inform security guards and the front office about questionable activities that you see in the parking lot of the business or anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. As well as understanding parking validation in the business, alerting them about automobiles that are parked in reserved parking spots, and automobiles that are parked in violation of the parking rules. Furthermore, if you witness vandalism or someone damaging the cars in the parking lots, report it to the authorities and to the company. Make sure employees do not give out personal information to telephone requests about a co-worker or someone else that works there.
Besides installing security cameras in all entrances and exits, it is recommended that you are aware of all the employees that work in the company. Additionally, providing brochures and information about stalking awareness and prevention to all employees. If your business provides a training or information day about stalking prevention; Do not skip the training because it can help you or someone else that is being harassed and stalked. If possible, leave your workplace with another co-worker at the same time for your safety and leave at various times from work with another co-worker. Nonetheless, if you cannot leave with another co-worker, it is recommended not to tell anyone about your work schedule especially if you feel you are being stalked by an ex.
Read posters and brochures about stalking awareness and prevention in workplaces. Be careful with unknown text messages from people passing by to be your co-worker or someone that you know from your workplace. It is necessary to understand the consequences of workplace stalking because one loses time from work, has more sick days, being more afraid to go to work, and avoids collaborating with co-workers. It is essential to understand and know about workplace policies, procedures, and work conduct guidelines. Be aware of stalking behaviors in-person and online.
Inform management about parking issues, parking lighting issues, overgrown plants, overgrown trees, and overgrown bushes, or anything that needs to be repaired. Have a day to discuss gardening maintenance, lighting fixtures, and other maintenance issues. Discuss about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable at work. Do not reply to unknown numbers from text messages and from phone calls. If you must work late at night, have a security guard to lead you to your automobile before you go home.
You can wear a dark blue ribbon or indigo ribbon for Stalking Awareness. Stalking can be considered an organized crime, and indigo is used to bring awareness of organized stalking.
