Understanding ADHD & Study Tips (ADHD Awareness Month 2025)
To
bring awareness of ADHD, it is necessary to understand attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder. As well as finding ways to help your child or your
adult college friend study for a test. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
makes it difficult to focus, follow instructions, constant movement, and might
make impulses without thinking about the consequences of one’s actions.
Nonetheless, it can be difficult to stand still, sit still, and pay attention
to someone that is speaking. Yet, having ADHD can be managed as well as having
healthy relationships.
ADHD can make you
forget certain items such as school supplies, books, binders, keys, or other
items. It can make it difficult to concentrate on what someone is telling you
in a conversation. Other times you might feel restlessness, loneliness, and
feel uncomfortable in a social setting. You might skip questions, parts of
instructions, and might have disorganized class notes. Here are tips for
studying and managing ADHD.
It is important
to communicate with one topic at a time or break the topics into parts in a
conversation, for teaching, or for studying. Also, making each study topic in
segments and writing it onto colored index cards. Make a key ring with colored
index cards or several key rings to put the index cards together as a book.
Next, designate one color index card for studying one topic at a time. After that,
make a comfortable study area without distractions.
Another way is to
have breaks between studying by stretching, drawing, painting, or other
activities that are relaxing. Use color pencils, highlighters, or color paper
to study and to memorize information. Additionally, use tabs, binder clips with
labels for index cards, and paper cut into shapes for studying geometry,
languages, or other subjects. Write an outline with colored pens and write down
the main facts or information that was reviewed during class time. As well as
having a homework helper or a note taker for taking notes in class.
Keep in mind that
having ADHD can be managed to learn and develop studying skills in a unique
manner to complete homework assignments. It does not prevent you from having a
healthy romantic relationship, a career, or anything that you want to achieve.
Having ADHD as an adult can be managed as well as having organization tips to
avoid getting distracted at work. Do not feel like a failure or feel guilty of
making mistakes in the workplace. Paying attention to details is not easy,
especially if there are so many distractions in the workplace.
Nevertheless, it
is recommended to reduce distractions in the workplace especially if you have
ADHD or know someone that has ADHD. Unclutter anything that might be
distracting and keep work instructions simple so everyone can understand it.
Have reminders of daily work tasks, planners, or a weekly chart to keep track of
work tasks. Split work tasks in segments, have a timer with a relaxing sound,
and have colored bins of items that need to be used for all job tasks. Have
pictures, symbols, or have instructions written in many colors that can be
easily read.
Finishing
projects with ADHD can be challenging but it can be done to complete them. Take
breaks in the workplace and practice breathing techniques with a mantra to help
you focus. If you cannot sit still or sit in silence, you can do stretches,
walk, or listen to a podcast. Speak to your career mentor and get resources
about managing ADHD. Include Yoga to help you improve your focus and to reduce
hyperactivity.
Always consult
with your doctor before practicing Yoga for managing ADHD. Mindfulness and
Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Therapeutic Yoga can be beneficial if you have ADHD
and have sleep issues. Consult with your doctor if you are restless, have a
tough time being in silence, and focusing on conversations. Speaking too much,
interrupting, and not listening in conversations can be difficult to maintain a
healthy relationship. If your partner has ADHD it is recommended to learn more
about ADHD and to get to know your partner.
Being proud of
your partner's achievements and celebrating their success can be helpful. Do
not make your partner feel uncomfortable but learning about ADHD can help you
improve your relationship. If your partner feels inadequate, help them to feel
better with compliments and celebrating their successes. Seek couple's
counseling to help you understand their excessive hyperactivity, forgetfulness,
or miscommunication. Finally, practice self-care together and be
supportive.
Be available for
your partner and demonstrate emotional support. Understand your child or your
partner with ADHD. Seek student counseling to help you comprehend ADHD and your
learning style. Wear orange to bring awareness of ADHD. Here are resources about
