Ear Care for Piercings, Cleaning, and Aftercare

Cleaning and taking care of your ear piercing can help you feel comfortable wearing earrings. Also, it can prevent you from feeling embarrassed by sweaty odor. It is necessary to take care of your ear piercing after it has healed besides taking care of a new piercing. Although you might have gotten your ear piercing many years ago, it is necessary to clean your ear piercing and your earrings without neglecting ear hygiene. Taking care of an ear piercing after removing the earring can help your ear lobe to rest from heavy earrings, plastic earrings, or other metallic earrings.

Also, it can help avoid odor, itchy skin, and prevent infection. It is also recommended to clean your ear piercing before putting on your earrings and after wearing them. Before you put on your earrings, inspect the back of your earrings and the back of your ears. Keep in mind that the back of your ears can get excessive odor during the summer season and during unexpected hot weather. Also, exercising, wearing eyeglasses, and not cleaning the back of your ears can accumulate odor in the back of your ears.

If you see and feel bumps on the back of your ears, consult with your primary doctor. It is necessary to get your ear piercing examined by a doctor to take care of an infection and bumps filled with liquid. Nonetheless, taking care of the back of your ears can prevent infection, skin irritation, and redness with itchy skin. Be careful wearing certain metallic earrings that you might be allergic to. It is recommended to wear hypoallergenic earrings and jewelry.

In the shower, you can use non-fragrant soap to clean the back of your ears. Saline solution or sea salt without iodine and warm water can be used to clean the back of your ear piercing. Add sea salt and warm water in a spray bottle to clean your ear piercing after taking a shower. Spray the saline solution on the back of your ears. Dry the back of your ears after cleaning it with saline solution.

Another way is by using Tea Tree oil with a carrier oil to clean your ear piercing that has healed. Combine Tea Tree oil with Jojoba or Coconut oil. Then use a cotton ball to apply one drop of oil mixture to clean the front and back of the ear piercing. Tree Tea oil can help reduce odors, especially from sweat. Always consult with your dermatologist and do a patch test before using it to reduce odor.

Rose water and violet water is not recommended to clean the back of your ears. However, you can use witch hazel without alcohol to clean the back of your ears. Witch hazel helps with swelling. Always consult with your doctor before using it for swelling caused by ear piercings or tight earrings. Avoid wearing too tight earrings and avoid sleeping with earrings.

Change your earrings often especially if you wear the same pair of earrings to go to work. Another tip is to clean your earrings the night before and have them ready before going to work. If you get an ear-piercing infection, stop wearing the pair of earrings: Seek professional medical help for the swelling, skin itch, and other symptoms. Avoid exercising with earrings. Another recommendation is not to wear too small earrings or earrings that are difficult to remove.

In addition, avoid getting your hair, long nails, or hair ties getting caught with your earrings. Lastly, clean your earrings with baby shampoo, ketchup, baking soda, vinegar, salt, and baking soda, witch hazel or with essential oils like Tea Tree Oil and vinegar. Clean your ear piercing twice a day or more frequently depending on your exercise routine. Always consult with your dermatologist and your primary care physician for treatments and for reducing sweat odor from the back of your ears.
