Self-Actualization & Work Tips

Self-actualization makes oneself to fully accept oneself through evaluation and self-awareness. Self-evaluation can be a lengthy process and understanding one’s actions, behaviors, values, strengths, and achievements. It is necessary to practice self-improvement and self-development to be aware of one’s job skills. Also, by self-evaluating oneself one can feel capable of one’s achievements and feel less job dissatisfaction. Although there are many reasons for job dissatisfaction, practicing self-evaluation can help you solve problems and update your resume for a better job.

Job dissatisfaction can make someone feel that their job is meaningless, feel unappreciated, and not feel capable of doing certain job tasks. Also, when employees and your boss lack appreciation for what you do in the job; It makes you feel unmotivated. Dissatisfaction at work can also occur when one is getting paid less, limiting job tasks, reducing job hours, lack of training for the job position, and poor management. Not being interested in doing job tasks because of the lack of support from your boss and the entire administration from where you work leads to frustration.

Insufficient support and no job incentives can make you feel more job dissatisfaction. This can also occur in volunteering when you volunteer for so many years without getting paid. Therefore, doing self-evaluation can help you feel motivated in finding a better job where you can feel creative, confident, and appreciated. Self-actualization makes one realize what one can do better and understanding one’s strengths. It is knowing one’s abilities, creativity, and motivates you to learn more to continue with your career growth.

It is necessary to develop self-awareness, develop job skills, and believe in yourself with a positive mindset. It helps one’s transformation, and it encourages one’s personal growth in one’s career. Pursuing one’s internal motivation to do something that one has always wanted to accomplish is one way to practice self-actualization. This can be done with self-awareness, self-responsibility, self-empathy, self-appreciation, and understanding one’s self-value. Avoid setting a time limit to accomplish what you want to do and to feel self-empowerment.

To recognize one’s self-actualization, begin with self-acceptance of yourself. No matter how many times certain people might make you feel unfit for certain job tasks; One must have self-compassion, self-empathy, and know one’s role in the job. Additionally, one must be able to feel comfortable doing self-correction of one’s errors in the job without getting angry. Furthermore, attaining self-fulfillment has five phases to complete the process of self-actualization. These phases make one feel constant appreciation and the realization of one’s abilities.

Before taking a job opportunity, think about the five phases of self-actualization. The first phase are physical needs such as food, water, a place to sleep, clothing, and sexual intimacy. Make sure your job gives you a good salary and if you must purchase a uniform for the job. Think about saving money for transportation and your method of traveling for the job. Also, observe the employees that are working in the company or in the organization and see if they feel joyful working there.

Dissatisfaction in a job makes one feel sick more often and can make you feel more stress when you get home. This affects your sexual intimacy with your partner as well as affecting your sleep and your meals. The second phase is feeling safe at home, at work, and feeling peaceful anywhere you go. Although the first two weeks of the job might make you feel nervous, make sure you are just feeling nervous because of the new job tasks. If you continue feeling nervous in your job, it might be an unfriendly working environment.

The third phase is love and your desires. In this phase you can also think about self-care, self-love, self-compassion, self-control, and your self-worth. The fourth phase is self-esteem which this can be tough throughout the year and with any type of job. One’s self-esteem can decrease and increase in many levels during job hours and after job hours. The last phase is self-actualization.

Self-actualization began with Abraham Harold Maslow, an American psychologist who created the hierarchy of one’s basic needs for self-actualization. When one has reached self-actualization there is no prejudgment between oneself and others. It is necessary to have self-actualization at work because this permits you to feel self-fulfillment at a professional level. Yet, it might be challenging especially in a poor unfriendly working environment. It does not mean perfectionism at work but learning to become a better person and employee.

Avoid perfectionism. Mindfulness and tracking your progress can help you attain self-actualization. Do not get angry or feel guilty of making mistakes during your job. Practice self-authenticity, take care of yourself, make a network of healthy friendships, and be realistic with your goals. Here is a brief list of attaining self-actualization.

  1. Track your work progress with a job journal.
  2. Keep the same job journal even if you change jobs or your career so you can practice self-reflection about your progress.
  3. Make authentic connections with your friendships without losing your personal values and respect.
  4. Practice gratitude, creative writing, poetry, arts, and crafts.
  5. If the work values are not equivalent to your personal values, reconsider the job opportunity or reconsider working there.
  6. Practice self-improvement, self-discovery, self-nurturing, and self-knowledge.
  7. Continue with your job aspirations by furthering your job training and developing job skills.
  8. Do not let anyone change your joyful mood at work.

Feeling dissatisfaction in your job can make you feel tired and make you focus less on yourself. Moreover, pursue in leaving the job but do speak to HR before leaving it. Let them know why you are leaving the job without having them make assumptions.

Be careful in sharing your knowledge with others at work especially if they take those ideas to get recognition from their boss.
