Making friendships at work can be supporting, valuable, and can also give you feedback about your work skills. It is necessary to avoid having certain friendships in the workplace, especially if you cannot have a good relationship with them due to their behavior, attitude, and the comments that they say to everyone. It is nice to work in a workplace but there are times when it seems like you are in a spinning Ferris wheel with the same employees that mistreat other co-workers.

Experiencing work in a tense and pessimistic workplace can make anyone feel discomfort, discontent, and lack of respect for others. Sometimes leaving the workplace is the best thing to do for one’s mental and physical well-being. It is necessary to follow the company’s rules but when co-workers disrespect each other it can make it difficult to concentrate on your job tasks. It also makes it tough to work in a workplace where the business manager is always yelling and does not seem to care about their co-workers.’ Nonetheless, it is essential that one practices self-respect in their workplace and respects everyone working there.

It is vital to act when it comes to disrespect in the workplace and before it escalates into further disagreement. Respecting co-workers is something that needs to be done for their emotional health and for your emotional health. It is not only because of health reasons, but being responsible, dependable, and gaining trust from everyone that works in the workplace can make it less stressful working there. Create a checklist so you can practice self-respect daily when you are at work and at home. As well as having a list of work boundaries of when you say “yes” and when you say “no.”

Striving for self-respect is about your personal job growth and taking care of your mental wellness at work. Often co-workers might lose disrespect because they feel threatened, frustrated, and might feel insecure with themselves. Also, this occurs when one co-worker has more job experience, and they might feel that they are not good enough for the job. No matter what the reasons are it is not acceptable to disrespect co-workers. Approximately thirty-six percent of co-workers have experienced and witnessed disrespect in the workplace which includes interrupting others while they are speaking, bad comments, insults, and shaming them.

The worst part is that gaslighting at work, gossiping, and feeling distrustful towards co-workers can be another work challenge. Nobody wants to come to a workplace where there are so many disrespectful comments, insults, and bad jokes. To have self-respect one needs to treat others with kindness. Yet, kindness needs to be genuine and not fake. Self-respect in the workplace can occur by not permitting disrespectful behavior and mistreatment.

As well as practicing self-acceptance, self-care, and knowing one's values. Additionally, to have self-respect does not mean to be offensive and overconfident with your skills. Often some co-workers or business managers feel they have too much authority over other employees. They might feel and act that they know everything and are better than their co-workers. The worst part is that they feel they can control anyone and everything in the office.

Therefore, be cautious when you are working. Dedicate your time to practice self-control, self-confidence, and self-worth to have self-respect in the workplace. Do not engage with co-workers who have their clique. You do not need to be in a club or in a group of co-workers who do not allow other co-workers to join them. Instead stay away from co-workers who make bad comments, disrespectful, and who do not help you in your job.

For example, if you need help with the coffee pot or water cooler and you ask a co-worker for help; Make sure the co-worker is not disrespectful towards you with their bad comments. Even if you are respectful towards them, do not copy or mimic their bad attitude. Do not take it personally, especially if they laugh and tell you that you put the coffee filter backwards which is their way of insulting you. You know you did not put the coffee filter backwards from the coffee pot. Instead ask another co-worker to help you with the coffee pot or water cooler.

Although not all workplaces are like this but be aware of how and what co-workers say to you and others. As well as focusing and observing their body language. Avoid speaking to co-workers who are disrespectful towards you. Take deep breaths and move on with your job tasks. To have more self-respect, be honest.

Do not let co-workers reduce your self-esteem and self-confidence. Be kind and help other co-workers when they ask for help. If they insult, you or make bad jokes report it to Human Resources. Practice gratitude and stand up to defend yourself from co-workers that are disrespectful to you. Communicate with respect by doing a handshake or bowing to other co-workers.

Practice courtesy with your co-workers. For example, if someone buys coffee for several co-workers; Do not exclude a co-worker from drinking coffee. It is disrespectful and lacks courtesy if you buy coffee for some co-workers and not all of them. Last, if you witness disrespectful behavior and mistreatment, report it immediately.
